Die Akari Stehleuchte ist Teil der Akari Lichtskulpturen, die 1951 von dem amerikanisch-japanischen Künstler entworfen wurden. Er wählte für diese Objekte den Namen „Akari“, ein Wort, das auf Japanisch „Licht“ bedeutet und sowohl Beleuchtung als auch physische Leichtigkeit bedeutet.
Die Inspiration für das Design der akari Leuchten stammt von einem Besuch im japanischen Fischerdorf Gifu, wo den Fischern bei der Arbeit zugesehen wurde. Sie nutzen nicht nur abgerichtete Kormorane für die Jagd, sondern auch Laternen, um Fische anzulocken. Diese Laternen hatten Rippen aus Bambus, die mit feinem Papier überzogen waren.
Das Design dieser traditionellen Laternen nahm er zum Anlass, selbst Lichtskulpturen aus Holz und Papier zu schaffen. Für die Akari Stehleuchte verwendet der Designer Papier des Maulbeerbaums, weil es das Licht weicher macht, sanft macht und gleichmäßig verteilt.
