01 Overview Light, Named

Akari — the Japanese word for light. A table-scale sculpture rooted in the lantern tradition of Gifu.

A refined example of the Akari light sculptures first designed in 1951 by a pioneering American-Japanese artist, the Akari Table Lamp draws directly from the traditional fishing lanterns of Gifu, Japan. Its slender framework — reminiscent of bamboo ribs — is wrapped in hand-pasted rice paper, softening and diffusing the bulb into an even, ambient glow. True to the dual meaning of its name, Akari is at once illumination and a lightweight aesthetic: a sophisticated lighting piece that bridges cultural heritage and modern interior design.

A Note on Craft

The hand of the artisan, visible at the edges.

Each Akari shade is assembled through a meticulous hand-bonding process using paper and glue. Minor traces of glue along the edges of the lampshade may be visible — this is an inherent signature of the craft, not a defect, and no two Akari lamps are identical.

05 Materials & Craft Three Pillars
Rice Paper
Fine white paper, hand-pasted onto the iron ribs. Translucent enough to diffuse light into a soft, evenly distributed glow — warm, ambient, never harsh.
Iron Frame
Slender black iron ribs echo the bamboo structure of traditional Gifu lanterns. Matte finish, subtle silhouette visible through the paper when illuminated.
Hand-Bonded
Each shade is individually assembled and pasted by skilled artisans. Small traces of the bonding process are part of the finished object's character.

Indoor use only. Akari is designed for dry interior environments and is not suitable for bathrooms, wet rooms, or outdoor installations. Keep the paper shade away from moisture and direct heat.
08 Installation Setup & Wiring
  • Assemble the iron rib frame first, then carefully slide the rice paper shade over the frame — follow the step-by-step installation video above for your size (1A or 24N).
  • Install an E26 or E27 bulb (sold separately). A warm white LED bulb (2700K–3000K) gives the most flattering glow through the paper shade.
  • Plug into a standard wall outlet. The 150 cm cord includes an inline on/off switch for easy reach on a table or side surface. The lamp ships with your chosen regional plug (US, UK, AU, or EU) — specify at checkout so it arrives ready for your local outlet.
  • When replacing the bulb, ensure the lamp is unplugged and the bulb has cooled completely. Handle the paper shade with clean, dry hands.

09 Questions Frequently Asked
Which plug type should I choose?
Please choose the plug type that matches your local outlets at checkout: US plug (North America, Japan), UK plug (United Kingdom, Ireland, Hong Kong, Singapore), AU plug (Australia, New Zealand, China), or EU plug (most of continental Europe). The lamp itself supports full-range AC 110–240V, so only the plug shape needs to match — no transformer is required.
Is a light bulb included?
No. The Akari takes a standard E26 or E27 screw-base bulb, sold separately. We recommend a warm white LED (2700K–3000K, 5–8W) for the most flattering glow through the paper shade, and to keep heat output low.
Why are there small glue marks on the edge of my lampshade?
Akari shades are assembled by hand using a meticulous paper-and-glue bonding process. Minor glue traces along the edges are inherent to this traditional craft and are considered normal — not a quality defect. Each shade is subtly different as a result.
How do I connect the wires correctly?
Inside the lamp's socket there are numbered terminal holes. Connect the black wire to hole number 2, and the white wire to hole number 3. See the wiring diagram in Section 08 above, and the installation video for your model.
What's the difference between Akari 1A and Akari 24N?
They are two different silhouettes at the same table-scale. The 1A is the compact, classic form (Dia 26cm x H 43cm) — ideal for a bedside table, side table, or console. The 24N is larger and more sculptural (Dia 40cm x H 58cm), with greater presence on a sideboard or entry console. Both share the same iron frame, rice paper shade, and hardware.
Does the 24N really ship in two boxes?
Yes. Because of its size, Akari 24N is shipped in two separate pieces/boxes for safer transit. Both pieces are required for complete assembly — please check both boxes have arrived before starting installation.
Can I use Akari on 110V or 220V power?
Yes. The Akari supports full-range AC 110–240V and is certified for use in North America, Europe, Australia, and the Middle East — no additional transformer required. Just pair it with a bulb rated for your local voltage.
Is Akari dimmable?
The lamp itself has a simple inline on/off switch. To dim the light, install a dimmable LED bulb and plug the lamp into a wall outlet controlled by a compatible dimmer switch. The lamp does not have a built-in dimmer.
Can I install Akari in a bathroom or outdoors?
No. Akari is for dry indoor use only. The rice paper shade is sensitive to moisture and humidity — avoid bathrooms, kitchens with high steam exposure, covered porches, or any outdoor environment. Also keep the shade away from radiators and direct heat sources.
How do I clean the paper shade?
Dust very gently with a soft, dry brush (a camel-hair paintbrush or a feather duster works well). Do not use water, cleaning sprays, or damp cloths on the paper. Handle with clean, dry hands to avoid staining.

In Detail

In the Texture, a World of Its Own

Held to the light, the character of the material comes alive. Slender mulberry fibres weave freely through every inch of washi, supple bamboo ribs trace the lantern's full silhouette, and warm-toned hardware finishes each joint with a gentle touch.

These are the details worth leaning in for: the soft grain left by hand-made paper, the seamless lines where panels meet, and the quiet, enduring weight of a fixture made to last. Beauty rests in the smallest things.

Akari series
Handcrafted, One by One

Shaped by Hand, Woven with Time

Every shade is hand-shaped by skilled artisans, with time and full attention worked into each one. In an age that prizes efficiency, it is the mark of the hand that matters here — so no two lanterns share exactly the same texture, fold, or quality of light. More than a source of light, each is a piece of art that still carries the warmth of the hands that made it.

The Forms

One Light, Seven Forms

One lamp, and the room is given space to breathe.

A quiet end to a loud day.
