Akari

Model UF4-33N
Tall Floor Luminaire · Mulberry Paper & Iron
01 Overview From Gifu, Reaching Upward

Akari — Japanese for light. A tall, hand-bonded paper sculpture inspired by the fishing lanterns of Gifu, Japan.

The Akari UF4-33N is a hallmark of mid-20th-century Japanese-American design, drawing directly from the traditional fishing lanterns of Gifu, Japan — the original bamboo-and-paper lanterns used by fishermen along the Nagara River. Created by a pioneering American-Japanese artist in 1951, the Akari pairs a slender iron rib frame with a hand-pasted mulberry paper shade, softening the bulb into an even, ethereal glow. Named "Akari" — the Japanese word for light — the piece honours both literal illumination and a sense of weightless lightness. The UF4-33N is the tallest model in the Akari range, at 190 cm of soaring paper-and-wood presence.

Hand-Bonded Mulberry Paper

A note on craft.

Each Akari shade is assembled through a meticulous hand-bonding process using paper and glue. Minor traces of glue along the edges of the lampshade may be visible — this is an inherent signature of the craft, not a defect. No two Akari lamps are identical, and subtle variations in the paper's grain and translucency are part of its character.

A tall floor-to-ceiling presence. At 190 cm (74.8″ / approximately 6 ft 3 in), the UF4-33N is a vertical statement — taller than most people. Best suited to rooms with at least 2.4 m (8 ft) ceiling clearance so the lamp reads as a sculpture, not a column pressing against the ceiling.
05 Materials & Craft Three Pillars
Mulberry Paper
Fine mulberry paper, hand-pasted onto the iron ribs. Translucent enough to diffuse light into an even, warm, ambient glow — the honeyed signature of the Akari form.
Iron Frame
Slender black iron ribs echo the bamboo structure of traditional Gifu lanterns. Matte-finished, with a subtle silhouette visible through the paper when illuminated.
Hand-Bonded
Each shade is individually assembled and pasted by skilled artisans. Small traces of the bonding process are part of the finished object's character.

Indoor use only. The Akari is designed for dry interior environments and is not suitable for bathrooms, wet rooms, or outdoor installations. Keep the paper shade away from moisture, direct heat, and open flames.
08 Installation Setup & Wiring
  • Unbox with care — because of its height (190 cm), the UF4-33N ships in an elongated box. Assembly is floor-up: set the base down first, then slide the iron rib frame over the base, followed by the mulberry paper shade.
  • Install an E26 or E27 bulb (sold separately). A warm white LED bulb (2700K–3000K) gives the most flattering, honeyed glow through the mulberry paper shade. Low-wattage LEDs (5–8 W) are recommended to keep heat output low.
  • Plug into a standard wall outlet. The 150 cm cord includes an inline on/off switch for easy reach from a sofa or reading corner.
  • When replacing the bulb, unplug the lamp and let the bulb cool completely. Handle the paper shade with clean, dry hands — never press or rub against the paper, as the shape is maintained by wire tension.

09 Questions Frequently Asked
How tall is the UF4-33N — and will it fit my room?
The UF4-33N stands at 190 cm (74.8″ / approximately 6 ft 3 in). It's the tallest model in the Akari range and is designed as a sculptural statement piece. We recommend a minimum ceiling clearance of 2.4 m (8 ft) — below this, the lamp will feel crowded. In rooms with 2.7 m (9 ft) or higher ceilings, it reads at its most dramatic.
Is a light bulb included?
No. The Akari takes a standard E26 or E27 screw-base bulb, sold separately. We recommend a warm white LED (2700K–3000K, 5–8W) for the most flattering glow through the mulberry paper shade, and to keep heat output low on the paper.
Why are there small glue marks on the edge of my lampshade?
Akari shades are assembled by hand using a meticulous paper-and-glue bonding process. Minor glue traces along the edges are inherent to this traditional craft and are considered normal — not a quality defect. Each shade is subtly different as a result.
How do I connect the wires correctly?
Inside the lamp's socket there are numbered terminal holes. Connect the black wire to hole number 2, and the white wire to hole number 3. See the wiring diagram in Section 08 above — and refer to the installation video for a step-by-step walk-through.
Can I use Akari on both 110V and 220V power?
Yes. The Akari supports full-range AC 110–240V and is certified for use in North America, Europe, Australia, and the Middle East — no additional transformer required. Just pair it with a bulb rated for your local voltage.
Is Akari dimmable?
The lamp itself has a simple inline on/off switch. To dim the light, install a dimmable LED bulb and plug the lamp into a wall outlet controlled by a compatible dimmer switch. The lamp does not have a built-in dimmer.
Can I install Akari in a bathroom or outdoors?
No. Akari is for dry indoor use only. The mulberry paper shade is sensitive to moisture and humidity — avoid bathrooms, kitchens with high steam exposure, covered porches, or any outdoor environment. Also keep the shade away from radiators and direct heat sources.
How do I clean the paper shade?
Dust very gently with a soft, dry brush (a camel-hair paintbrush or a feather duster works well). Do not use water, cleaning sprays, or damp cloths on the paper. Handle with clean, dry hands to avoid staining.
Will the paper yellow or fade over time?
Mulberry paper naturally deepens very slightly with age and exposure to light — this is part of the piece's character and not considered a defect. Keep the lamp out of direct sunlight to slow natural ageing, and use a low-heat LED bulb (not halogen or incandescent) to minimise yellowing from heat.

In Detail

In the Texture, a World of Its Own

Held to the light, the character of the material comes alive. Slender mulberry fibres weave freely through every inch of washi, supple bamboo ribs trace the lantern's full silhouette, and warm-toned hardware finishes each joint with a gentle touch.

These are the details worth leaning in for: the soft grain left by hand-made paper, the seamless lines where panels meet, and the quiet, enduring weight of a fixture made to last. Beauty rests in the smallest things.

Handcrafted, One by One

Shaped by Hand, Woven with Time

Every shade is hand-shaped by skilled artisans, with time and full attention worked into each one. In an age that prizes efficiency, it is the mark of the hand that matters here — so no two lanterns share exactly the same texture, fold, or quality of light. More than a source of light, each is a piece of art that still carries the warmth of the hands that made it.
