Neotenic

Q: What does "Neotenic" mean?

Neoteny is a biological term for the retention of juvenile features into adulthood — the soft, rounded, slightly clumsy proportions we associate with young animals. The Neotenic Collection translates this idea into objects: simple shapes, short thick members, soft edges, and a deliberately childlike presence. The intent is to create pieces that trigger an instinctive nurturing response — that feel friendly and tender rather than imposing.

Q: Is the body real ceramic?

No — the body is pigmented resin , not ceramic. This is a deliberate choice, not a cost compromise: resin gives Neotenic its characteristic soft-edged silhouette (which would crack during ceramic firing), and the colour is mixed into the resin itself rather than painted on the surface. The result is a body that feels warm and tactile, holds its colour over time, and is significantly more impact-resistant than ceramic — important for a bedside lamp that gets handled regularly.

Q: What kind of bulb should I use? (Important — read this before ordering)

A G9 bi-pin LED bulb, mains-voltage AC 110–240V version . This is the most common buyer mistake — two types of G9 bulbs exist: mains-voltage (for direct wall-outlet fixtures like Neotenic) and 12V (for transformer-based recessed lighting). A 12V G9 bulb will burn out instantly in this lamp. Confirm the bulb label reads "AC 110–240V" or "mains voltage" before buying. We recommend warm white LEDs ( 2700K–3000K, 2–4 W ) — the white glass diffuser softens the output beautifully at this colour temperature.

Q: Where does Neotenic work best?

Compact horizontal surfaces — bedside tables, console tables, low bookshelves, reading nooks, hallway sideboards, nurseries, and quiet corners of living rooms . The 26 cm diameter is small enough not to crowd the surface, and the 40 cm height casts a soft, downward-pooling glow ideal for ambient evening light. It is not a primary room light — it works best as a quiet, atmospheric companion to other lighting.

Q: Are the other Neotenic Collection pieces available?

Yes. The Neotenic Collection consists of four pieces : the Lounge (seating), the Floor Light , this Table Light , and the Sconce (wall-mounted). All four share the collection's soft-edged, deliberately tender design language. Listings for the other pieces are available separately, and we can co-ordinate colour matching across multiple pieces — please contact us for collection ordering.

Q: Which plug should I choose?

Neotenic ships with your choice of plug at checkout — US plug (Type A/B, North America), UK plug (Type G, UK / Ireland / Hong Kong / Singapore), AU plug (Type I, Australia / New Zealand / China), or EU plug (Type C/F, continental Europe and most of the Middle East). Choose the plug type that matches your wall outlets — the fixture itself supports full-range AC 110–240V, so it will work on any of these regional supplies once paired with the correct plug.

Table Lamp · Tender Resin & White Glass

01 Overview A Tender, Childlike Form

A small, soft-edged table lamp with a deliberately clumsy silhouette — an object that asks to be cherished rather than admired from a distance.

Neotenic is the table-light expression of a deliberately tender design language. Its body is built from simple shapes, short thick members, and softly rounded edges — the geometry of a creature still finding its balance. A globular white glass diffuser perches on a stout pigmented resin base (not ceramic — the soft-edged form would be impractical and fragile in fired clay), the proportions slightly off, the stance unmistakably young. The result is a piece that triggers something instinctive: the impulse to nurture, to cherish the childlike, to see ourselves reflected in our surroundings. Compact at 26 cm in diameter and 40 cm tall, Neotenic suits bedside tables, console shelves, reading nooks, nurseries, and any quiet corner where a soft, friendly glow is wanted.

Design Philosophy · Neotenic

Neoteny is the biological term for the retention of juvenile features into adulthood. The Neotenic Collection translates this idea into furniture and lighting — simple shapes, soft edges, a clumsy charm — appealing to our instinct to nurture and cherish the childlike.

04 Materials & Craft Three Pillars

Pigmented Resin Body

The stout, soft-edged body is cast from pigmented resin (not ceramic) — a single, continuous form with no visible seams. Colour is mixed into the resin itself, so the surface keeps its warmth and tactile depth even after extended handling. Resin won't chip or peel the way painted ceramic does, and the soft-edged silhouette is achievable in resin where ceramic firing would crack it.

White Glass Diffuser

A globular white glass diffuser caps the resin body, softening the G9 bulb's output into an even, low-glare glow. The glass is the same on every colour variant — it carries the light while the resin carries the personality, keeping the collection visually coherent across all four finishes.

G9 Bi-Pin LED · Mains Voltage

A G9 mains-voltage socket sits inside the diffuser, accepting compact bi-pin LED bulbs. Use mains-voltage AC 110–240V G9 bulbs only — not 12V variants. Warm-white LEDs (2700–3000K, 2–4 W) give the most flattering light through the white glass — soft, low-glare, well-suited to bedside or console use.

Important — buy the right G9 bulb. Two types of G9 bulbs exist: mains-voltage (AC 110–240V) for direct wall-outlet use, and low-voltage (12V) for transformer-based fixtures. Neotenic requires the mains-voltage version only. A 12V bulb installed in this lamp will burn out instantly. Confirm the bulb label reads "AC 110–240V" or "mains voltage" before buying.

07 Installation Setup Notes

Plug-in operation — no electrician required. Neotenic ships with the plug type you select at checkout (US, UK, AU, or EU); plug directly into a standard wall outlet rated for AC 110–240V.
Watch the product video for visual reference of the assembled silhouette and lit appearance.
Unbox carefully. The resin body is solid and sturdy, but the white glass diffuser is delicate — handle the lamp by the resin base, not by the glass.
Place on a level, stable surface. Bedside tables, consoles, low shelves, and reading nooks are all ideal — Neotenic's compact 26 cm footprint fits comfortably alongside books and small objects.
Source the correct G9 bulb. The fixture takes one G9 bi-pin bulb, mains-voltage AC 110–240V version — confirm the bulb label reads "AC 110–240V" or "mains voltage", NOT "12V". We recommend warm white LED G9 bulbs (2700K–3000K, 2–4 W) for the softest glow through the white glass.
Route the 150 cm cable to a nearby outlet. The in-line switch sits roughly halfway down the cord, easy to reach without bending under the table or behind furniture.
Allow the bulb to cool before changing it — replace only when the fixture has been off for at least ten minutes.

08 Questions Frequently Asked

What does "Neotenic" mean?

Neoteny is a biological term for the retention of juvenile features into adulthood — the soft, rounded, slightly clumsy proportions we associate with young animals. The Neotenic Collection translates this idea into objects: simple shapes, short thick members, soft edges, and a deliberately childlike presence. The intent is to create pieces that trigger an instinctive nurturing response — that feel friendly and tender rather than imposing.

Is the body real ceramic?

No — the body is pigmented resin, not ceramic.

What kind of bulb should I use? (Important — read this before ordering)

A G9 bi-pin LED bulb, mains-voltage AC 110–240V version. We recommend warm white LEDs (2700K–3000K, 2–4 W) — the white glass diffuser softens the output beautifully at this colour temperature.

Which colour should I choose?

All four colours are pigmented through the resin body, so the surface stays warm and tactile regardless of finish. Pink — softest and most overtly tender, the colour that most strongly carries the collection's "childlike" intent; well suited to bedrooms and nurseries. Blue — quieter and more contemplative, good for studies and reading nooks. White — the most neutral and architectural, works in nearly any palette, reads more sculptural than playful. Dark Red — the most grounding, deeper in tone, more adult, good for libraries and rooms with darker palettes.

Where does Neotenic work best?

Compact horizontal surfaces — bedside tables, console tables, low bookshelves, reading nooks, hallway sideboards, nurseries, and quiet corners of living rooms. The 26 cm diameter is small enough not to crowd the surface, and the 40 cm height casts a soft, downward-pooling glow ideal for ambient evening light. It is not a primary room light — it works best as a quiet, atmospheric companion to other lighting.

Is Neotenic dimmable?

The fixture itself uses an in-line on/off switch on the cord — no dimmer is built in. To dim Neotenic, plug into a wall outlet controlled by a TRIAC dimmer switch (or use a smart plug) paired with a TRIAC-compatible dimmable G9 LED bulb (mains-voltage). Dimmed warm light through the white glass diffuser is particularly soft — well-suited to bedtime reading.

Are the other Neotenic Collection pieces available?

Yes. The Neotenic Collection consists of four pieces: the Lounge (seating), the Floor Light, this Table Light, and the Sconce (wall-mounted). All four share the collection's soft-edged, deliberately tender design language. Listings for the other pieces are available separately, and we can co-ordinate colour matching across multiple pieces — please contact us for collection ordering.

Is Neotenic safe for a child's room or nursery?

Yes, with normal lighting precautions. The pigmented resin body is impact-resistant and the colour is mixed through (won't chip or peel), making it safer than painted ceramic for handling. The cord runs to a wall outlet with an in-line switch — keep cords managed and out of reach of crawling infants, and place the lamp out of arm's reach of toddlers to prevent the glass diffuser from being knocked. As with any lamp in a child's room, supervise around the bulb (which can become hot during use) and keep the fixture on a stable surface.

Can I use it on both 110V and 220V circuits?

Yes. Neotenic supports full-range AC 110–240V and is certified for use in North America, Europe, Australia, and the Middle East. Just ensure the G9 bulb you purchase is rated for your local voltage (and is mains-voltage, not 12V).

Which plug should I choose?

Neotenic ships with your choice of plug at checkout — US plug (Type A/B, North America), UK plug (Type G, UK / Ireland / Hong Kong / Singapore), AU plug (Type I, Australia / New Zealand / China), or EU plug (Type C/F, continental Europe and most of the Middle East). Choose the plug type that matches your wall outlets — the fixture itself supports full-range AC 110–240V, so it will work on any of these regional supplies once paired with the correct plug.

Can I install it in a bathroom or outdoors?

No. Neotenic is rated IP20 for dry indoor use only — not suitable for bathrooms, wet rooms, covered porches, or any outdoor environment. Beyond the IP rating, the resin and pigment are not designed to withstand prolonged humidity or direct sunlight.

How do I clean it?

With the lamp unplugged and the bulb cool, dust the resin body and glass diffuser gently with a soft dry microfibre cloth. For the resin, a slightly damp cloth (water only, no solvents or alcohol-based cleaners) is fine — dry immediately. For the glass diffuser, use a glass-safe cleaner sparingly and avoid letting any liquid run down into the socket. Do not use abrasive sponges or scouring pads on either surface.
